Q. What are some of the recent projects that you've been working on?
A. I've been pretty busy lately, in the Fall I was in Toronto for a few months and I was shooting a TV show and it's created by the same guys who wrote for "Corner Gas" and I play a girl named Brianna. It was really great and it's a total comedy and it was a lot of fun. Airing right now on SyFy is a show called "Sanctuary" where I play the role of Kate Freelander. That's been going really well, I shot that last year and now it's half way through the States and now it's airing in Canada. I have a role in a Terry Miles film, who is a great Canadian director, whose last film went to Toronto and it stars Jennifer Beals and a few other pretty big names. I also just finished a film called Excited and it was directed by Bruce Sweeney and I finished that about a year ago and it's been going around the festival circuits. It premiered in Toronto and then it went to Vancouver and then it was in Palm Springs earlier this month.
Q. What can you tell us is new this season on "Sanctuary" and with your character Kate?
A. The Canadian episodes of "Sanctuary" are coming back this Friday on Space and it's a huge episode for Kate. The episodes is called "Penance" and it guest stars Michael Shanks. It really tells the back story of Kate and where she came from and what happened in her childhood to make her the way she is. Up to this point the audience knows her for being this really rough around the edges, sarcastic girl who loves to play with guns. They don't really know why she's like that or where she really came from. This puts things in perspective and I think it will give the audience a better understanding of who she really is.
Q. What originally made you want to be a part of the show?
A. The cast and crew have an amazing reputation in Vancouver, everybody knows them as being such a pleasure to work with. That was awesome, it has an amazing cast, Amanda Tapping is of course the lead, Robin Dunne, Ryan Robbins, and Christopher Heyerdahl, they're all just really, really good actors. When you're surrounded by people like that, you find yourself working better. Of course the role of Kate was so great, she's a complex character and she wasn't very likable at the beginning of the season, and she kind of evolves and has this wonderful story arc. For any actor that's always so great to be able to work with material like that. At the end of the day Amanda Tapping is really well known and she really rooted for me and wanted me to get the role. It made me want to get the role even more!
Q. What about your role as Kate continues to challenge you?
A. She's just constantly changing, I never really quite know what the writers are going to come up with episode after episode. Earlier in the season she was just this really tough girl and not very likable and you kind of warm up to her. Then you find out in one of the episodes, this post apocalyptic episode, between Will and Magnus that somewhere in the future Will marries Kate and they have a kid together. It's like, "Woah, where did that come," but it sort of establishes this possible connection between Will and Kate that's really exciting to play. After that I get to find out more about her back story and why she is the way that she is. She's really complex and she's this tough girl who likes to play with guns and beat up boys, but underneath, she's vulnerable and there is a reason why she is the way that she is.
Q. Where do you draw from for your portrayal of Kate?
A. I call Kate my own personal alter-ego because she is in many ways not like me at all. I am the complete opposite of her in real life. In some ways it's easier to play her just because I kind of already have an understanding of what her reactions are and what her decisions are and why she would choose the choices that she would choose just because it's generally the opposite of what I would do. I draw upon myself and probably a part of myself that wishes I could be as brash and daring as she is.
Q. What is it about the show "Sanctuary" that you feel continues to draw in so many viewers?
A. It's a really imaginative and really unique TV show. The writers are great and they are constantly coming up with ideas and they have a huge well of inspiration because the whole premise for "Sanctuary" is about a group of people who protect and study abnormals. These are mythological creatures that could possibly be living amongst us. There are so many different creatures that can come into play every single episode. Not just that, but the relationships between the characters are constantly evolving as well. That's always really fun to see the relationship between Magnus and WIll or Kate and Henry, there is constantly different obstacles that they have to face with each other.
Q. Do you have a latest obsession? Are you into any particular book, music group, sport or activity?
A. I have been reading a book called Outliers by Malcolm Gladwell which was recommended to me by Robin Dunne. I hadn't gotten around to buying it and reading it until now and I've been reading that and it's been pretty good. Hawksley Workman is a Canadian artist and he's been my obsession for the past, I don't know, six years of my life. I just absolutely adore his music and he just came out with two CDs. Every time I listen to his music it inspires me and makes me want to be more creative. I think he's my go-to guy, he's my muse.
Q. Is there a place online those interested can go to learn more about you?
A. I have a website called www.agamdarshi.com and there is also a fan page on Facebook. I am on Twitter, kind of, it's too hard!
